Analysis of "The Bourne Identity" Opening Sequence

On a stormy night, a young man is pulled out of the Mediterranean Sea by the crew of a fishing boat. Thinking the young man is dead, a curious fisherman with a scalpel finds two bullets in his back and a miniature laser device in his hip. The laser reveals a Swiss bank account number. Then the mystery man (Matt Damon) wakes up and starts asking questions to the man that took the bullets and laser out of him, this is a typical convention of a thriller, as right at the beginning of the film the actor asks questions and the audience also wants to know the answers to his questions in the film. The typical question was "who are you?" .."I dont know", this question not only the actor wants to know but the audience also wants to know. We do not know if Matt Damon is the Antagonist or the Protagonist yet as the films starts off to a mystery, not knowing who this man is and what his destiny is. There was already a slight use of mise-en-scene, the boat, and the bullets. When the man cut open Matt Damons overall he saw bullets in his back, this straight away indicates that this is a thriller and the the audience wants to know how those bullets got there and how did the laser get there and what exactly does it suppose to mean?. This film straight away gets the audience thinking on what Matt Damon might be, and what he is going to be up to. Questions that audiences may be asking:
Who is he?
Why has he got shot?
Who was after him?
Why was he found in the sea?
Where is he going next?
What is his plan?
This is the typical thriller where the audience starts asking questions right from the start. The audience do not exactly know whats going to happen, they may think of their own story but the film may twist in to a red herring, turning it into a wrong lead. Also the music which was used was very tense, you could just tell that this film is going to be a thriller.
